Mixed feelings about this. But (even if the location issue were purely political, which it emphatically is not) what feels like centuries into being a constituent of Eric Cantor, does it seem especially likely that his office will listen to my voice over the interests of his corporate masters? No, it really does not.

I am shocked. SHOCKED, I tell you.

Portrait of Sadness (and Redemption!)

Saw this while walking through Southeast, taking the photo and scooping up the pacifier with the intention of posting a ‘lost’ message on Craigslist. Then carried on, intending to a walk to the neighborhood Powells, but proceeding, it turned out, in the wrong direction.

A short time later, as I paused on the sidewalk, waving my (no longer connected to any phone service save for Skype) phone around, hoping to intercept a WiFi signal that might offer better direction than that with which I was individually blessed, along came a frantic dad. I asked if he might be looking for an errant elephant, and he was! And he asked if I needed directions, and I did! And then we then went on our respective ways, happily ever after or something like that, ta da.

Oh, Portland. I’d already committed my whole family to moving here and yet, you keep wooing me.

As you’ll discover throughout this interview, I feel reasonably stilted in trying to write words and formulate sentences.

I think a good novel would be where a bunch of men on a ship are looking for a whale. They look and look, but you know what? They never find him. And you know why they never find him? It doesn’t say. The book leaves it up to you, the reader, to decide. Then, at the very end, there’s a page you can lick and it tastes like Kool-Aid.

Woke up with this in my head, for a number of (variously contradictory) reasons. [Lines in bold are as they appeared before reblog; I would have emphasized different lines, and still others at other times, in accordance with shifts of mood/circumstance — i.e., don’t read too much into this; it’s just a damn fine song.]

Lemonworld, by The National

So happy I was invited

Give me a reason to get out of the city
See you inside watching swarms on TV
Livin’ or dyin’ in New York it means nothing to me
I gave my heart to the Army
The only sentimental thing I could think of
With cousins and colors and somewhere overseas
But it’ll take a better war to kill a college man like me

I’m too tired to drive anyway, anyway right now
Do you care if I stayed?
You can put on your bathing suit
And I’ll try to find somethin’ on this thing that means nothin’ enough

Losin’ my breath

You and your sister live in a Lemonworld
I want to sit in and die

This pricey stuff makes me dizzy
I guess I’ve always been a delicate man
Takes me a day to remember a day
I didn’t mean to let it get so far out of hand
I was a comfortable kid
But I don’t think about it much anymore
Lay me on the table, put flowers in my mouth
And we can say that we invented a summer lovin’ torture party

I’m too tired to drive anyway, anyway right now
Do you care if I stayed?
You can put on your bathing suit
And I’ll try to find something on this thing that means nothin’ enough

You and your sister live in a Lemonworld
I want to sit in and die

Losin’ my breath

So the scholarship guy asked if there’d been particular hardships that had kept me from going back to school all these years

And after I’d recovered from the wheezing attack brought on by my eruption of uncontrollable laughter, we had a good talk about the many, many opportunities likely to be available for me at PSU.

Oh, I’m just here for the free coffee, thanks.
