"Complaining about this compilation being published rather than, say, some other person’s first novel is like complaining that anthologies whatsoever exist. Would we complain that an anthology editor didn’t create, but rather, compiled and commented on a book’s individual narratives? (I can’t begin to count the number of novels and poetry collections I’ve bought by individual authors, after first seeing their works in anthologies. Would it make sense to resent the anthologies’ editors - even if, say, they got paid and the individual authors - assuming the use of their work was authorized - likely were paid in contributors’ copies, if at all?) As it happens, I’d been hoping for quite awhile (certainly, for months before Nick either followed me on Twitter, or considered contributions from me for the collection in question) that someone would compile just this sort of book. (And I think Nick’s a good candidate for putting it together. He could be lousy as, say, a first-time novelist - I wouldn’t know, or in this context, care, because that’s just not the kind of narrative under discussion! - but editing something like this seems like exactly the sort of gig he’s wired for.) I’ll be interested to read it - yes, even if my few items don’t make the cut. It’s just an anthology, people! Of extremely short-form material. Get over it."
— my comment in a Gawker thread that was hating on Nick Douglas back in February, recalled today due to a fresh round of hating (in response to which I more succinctly offered this.)
