Warning: In the following post, my propensity for hypomanic enthusiasm for whatever recent thing has possession of my brain is particularly in evidence. Comments to the effect that this is lame/trite/fannish/moronic behavior will be met with a resounding well, duh. Anyone proceeding further into this posts gets whatever bafflement or tepid bemusement they deserve.)

I am pretty much dying right now from waiting for these two CDs to come in the mail, which I ordered after an Amazon gift certificate from my generally awesome in-laws.

I have now read the email that follows, like, 3 times. It is a disease, this need to be able to wrap my ears around the entire body of work of any band or musician I fall wildly in love. Right now (despite the inexorably tragic elements), it’s all about Elliott Smith*. Presently, I have the EPS Division Day / No Name #6, Needle In the Hay, and Speed Trials, as well as the albums Either/or (so richly haunting) and New Moon. (Tracks all obtained legally, because I care about that. And while I could have ordered these other two albums from Amazon as downloads only, I wanted to be able to touch the CDs and really look at the album art, so I’m waiting, and waiting for them to arrive now.)

Recently enough, for me, it was The National (blame/credit this guy), and I could not rest until I had obtained every track they’d ever produced, not only from the great albums Boxer and Alligator, but also for last every obscure EP. (Not to mention, the DVD/CD set: A Skin, A Night - the CD for which (known as The Virginia EP) is fantastic, while the film itself is nightmarishly tedious in its effort to be “arty” (which is surely not the same as “artful,” which The National’s music is, including in live performance, though I’ve only seen them once. (It was magical, astonishing, and had not one or two both three encore songs, because we in the crowd fucking begged for it.) (Also: there was the additional bit of interestingness that the show was held at Richmond’s music venue which is called The National. Where else, really, would you want to see the band named that?)
